Article 90 plays an important role for understanding how NFPA 70E is constructed and is to be enforced. It is very similar to Article 90 of NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code. This Article provides the information that users of NFPA 70E can find important to quickly navigate the document to find answers to questions. It helps the user of NFPA 70E understand when and where this document applies as well as when it doesn’t apply. Important information for the proper use and application of NFPA 70E is found in Article 90 and should not be overlooked.

2024 Changes
The user of this Standard will recognize that as part of the 2024 edition, the Article has been reorganized to comply with the 2020 National Electrical Code Style Manual, which requires the first section of each article to provide the scope of the article. For Article 90, Section 90.1 is new requiring each section be advanced such that old 90.1 is now 90.2. This occurred for each Section of Article 90.

As can be seen, with the addition of new 90.1 the numbering now advances through 90.6. Old 90.2 which addressed what is and is not covered is now a part of 90.3 that includes a new title.
Documents that reference sections within Article 90 will have to be reviewed to ensure they align with the new numbering of sections within the Article. Because of the shift of all numbering due to the addition of a new 90.1, “Scope”, all other sections increased by one. References made to these sections by documents that could consist of training books and presentations as well as any safety plans will have to be updated with the new section numbers. The addition of 90.1 providing the Scope of Article 90 does not impact the enforcement of NFPA 70E.
